Drone production is expected to gradually increase to reach 1 million units per year by 2035.

On Tuesday, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin confirmed that his country has tripled its drone production as the devices play an increasingly prominent role in the Ukrainian conflict.

“This has been achieved thanks to state support for companies that are now creating new models, including civilian ones,” he said during his remarks at the Innoprom 2025 industrial expo in Yekaterinburg.

“Virtually all priority areas of industrial development have been included in the new national projects aimed at achieving technological leadership. One of them, which has shown high effectiveness, is unmanned aerial systems,” Mishustin said.

Among the new developments, he highlighted a heavy amphibious drone designed to transport cargo to hard-to-reach areas. The drone was unveiled Tuesday at the Yekaterinburg event.

“We just had the opportunity to see a drone-helicopter, the first to officially receive an operating permit in our country. We must strive not to lower the bar and set increasingly ambitious goals,” Mishustin said.

The war in Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the importance of drones for both intelligence gathering and combat, spurring development of these systems in Russia.

Two years ago, the Russian government approved a strategy for the development of unmanned aviation systems, which calls for gradually increasing commercial drone production to 1 million units annually by 2035.
